JFK and the Bay of Pigs
In 1960 we had one of the youngest candidates runs for presidency. This was John F. Kennedy (JFK) who would be running against Nixon. He was the youngest candidate that would run for president at the age of 43 years old. JFK was a Roman Catholic who had grown up in a rich family where as Nixon was 56 years old and a Quaker and had grown up poor. JFK would end up winning 303-219 with the popular vote being 49.7-49.5.
In 1961 after JFK wins the election JFK gives the green light for the Bay of Pigs Invasion. This was meant to be an invasion in south-west Cuba to overthrow Castro. This invasion was planned and funded by the United States. This invasion would go south and be unsuccessful and because of this the Cuba-America relationship would be severally strained. This relationship would be further strained even more by the Cuban missile crisis.
