Nixon
Richard Nixon would be the 37th President to be elected in the US. He had a focus on foreign policy and "Triangular Diplomacy" was Nixon's strategy to drive a wedge between China and the USSR both being the largest Communist powers in the world. Nixon would offer aid to China and would eventually offer a spot on the UN for China.
Nixon would be the first person to travel to China and to meet Mao Ze Dong which shocked the world because of this trip. He would also go and visit Moscow and meet Leonid Brezhnev the Soviet Leader and would discuss nuclear disarmament as well as a light trade deal and a joined space program. Nixon had been strongly anti-communist so the American people trusted his actions and the believed it would be beneficial for the country.
However in 1972 five men where arrested for breaking into the democrat political party headquarters at the Watergate hotel in Washington DC. They had been installing wiretaps as well as taking photos of documents. The leader of this group was also on the committee to re-elect Nixon and the committee was ironically called CREEP. At first Nixon was able to sweep this under the rug and would go on to win the 1972 election. However this story comes up again and a senate committee is setup to investigate. In the mean time Spiro Agnew, the VP, resigns facing charges of bribery and tax evasion. Nixon’s own personal counsel (John Dean) testifies to the Senate against Nixon but he tells the American public that "I am not a crook." Nixon had recorded conversations in the Oval Office, so the Senate asked for these tapes. He however, refused but the public demanded justice. He would end up releasing the tapes with a suspicious 17 minutes missing. Because of this the Senate would start drawing up papers of impeachment and before he is impeached Nixon resigns. Nixon’s successor, Gerald Ford, is the first person who was not elected to that office or the VP position and would become president.
