- The Cold War Starts right after the allies win after WWII and some historians believe it started right when the US dropped the second nuclear bomb on Japan.
- The Cold war can be described as Capitalism versus Communism with the two super powers never actually fighting but rather fighting in proxy wars
- Containment was the idea that Communism would spread and that in order to stop communism it must be contained.
- After WWII the "Big Three" meet to determine how Germany would be split into 4 zones as well as Berlin but Berlin would be in the Soviet zone meaning it could be cut off.
- The Soviet Union ends up cutting off Berlin but the capitalists countries provide aid through the air and eventually after a year the Soviets end the blockade and allow supplies via ground to reach west Berlin.
- Churchill puts the blame of the Cold War starting on the Soviet Union but they place the blame on the foreign policies of the US which reflect its monopolistic intents.
- Eventually once both the USSR and US have nuclear capability it soon became a race to who could build the most nuclear weapons. Eventually by 1975 the number of nukes in Soviet possession surpasses the US but in 1991 the number of warheads starts to decrease.
- After WWII everyone was hating communism and along comes Joseph McCarthy who starts pointing fingers at people being communist. He however eventually loses his validity when he starts blaming some war heroes
- The first proxy war that the US would be involved in is the Korean war. The Korean War started once North Korea invades South Korea. The US then gets involved to prevent communism from taking over as the North was communist. Eventually the US pushes the North out of the South but then China gets involved and peace is established along the 38th parallel,
- With such large nuclear capabilities both the US and the USSR come up with the idea of MAD where if one country attacks they are both guaranteed to be destroyed.
- During the Cold War society has a huge shift in society with the change of Rock 'n roll as well as a shift to suburbs rather than the city.
- In the 50s women start to shift to going to work with 10% more married women going to work.
